Tip calculator: how much to leave and how to split

This tip calculator works out the tip on a bill, the total to pay and, if you like, the amount per person when splitting between diners. Quick for the restaurant, the bar or a taxi.

How the tip is calculated

Tip = Bill × (percentage / 100)

The total is Bill + Tip, and per person is that total divided by the number of diners. For example, a £50 bill with a 15% tip is £7.50 tip, £57.50 total; split between 2 people, £28.75 each.

How much to tip

Customs vary a lot by country. In the UK and much of Europe a tip of 10% is a normal thank-you for good service, and is often optional. In the United States 15-20% is expected and forms part of staff pay. Always check whether a service charge is already on the bill.

Frequently asked questions

Is the tip calculated before or after tax? Usually on the total bill; you can apply it to the pre-tax amount if you prefer.

How do I split a bill with the tip? Add the tip to the total and divide by the number of people — the tool does it for you.

Do I always have to tip? Not in every country; in much of Europe it is an optional gesture, not an obligation.
