How pixels, inches and centimetres relate
A digital image has a fixed number of pixels. A print has a physical size. PPI or DPI connects both: it tells how many pixels are used for each printed inch.
inches = pixels / PPI · centimetres = inches x 2.54 · pixels = inches x PPI
Why aspect ratio matters
Aspect ratio is width divided by height, simplified as values like 3:2, 4:3, 1:1 or 16:9. A 3000 x 2000 px image is 3:2, so it fits a 6 x 4 inch print without cropping. The same image does not naturally fit square paper.
Common examples
- 3000 x 2000 px at 300 PPI prints at 10 x 6.67 inches, or about 25.4 x 16.93 cm.
- A 6 x 4 inch photo at 300 PPI needs 1800 x 1200 px.
- If the image ratio and paper ratio differ, choose between cropping, adding borders or stretching. Stretching changes the image and is usually the worst option.
